Ok, all you geekers! Who is downloading service pack 3 and why? I've never downloaded a service pack, will it be any different than any other windows update? Anything special I should know?

Thanks all!

I've had no trouble with xp sp3. It did resolve an issue I had regarding launching the first application I picked after booting into windows. You may see a bit of a performance boost. I installed a release candidate that was out a month or two ago and didn't have any trouble then either. You'll want to turn your anti virus off when you install. It's a simple installation. Do the backup if you like. It will ask you during the installation. It should be smooth sailing though.

Thank you. Is now too soon? Is there going to be an additional release in June?

it's out, if they're release another version, they lied about it being ready

To post 4, check your Internet sources before replying, the way you did...
XP SP3 will be released to Windows Update and pushed to consumers sometime in June.
To post 1, I'm not gonna install XP SP3 until I backup all relevant data, and image my hard drive.
The following 2 urls should answer any other XP SP3 questions you may have

So if microsoft is making everyone upgrade in june does that mean I will lose everything unless it's backed up? How do you back up data?

First of all, SP3 is already available as I declined to downloaded it last week (I'm in the UK). I believe it will be the last significant update to XP, and it includes much of the previously released major updates.
To Jeannie (post 6), you don't *have* to update at all, you can set updates to either notify you when they're available or ignore them altogether, or you can pick and choose which bits you want. I choose to be notified but don't generally download the updates.
Should you want to do a full system backup (operating system, programs as well as files) you can use something like Norton Ghost or Partition Magic to take a precise snapshot before you update. Don't rely on the restore feature as there's no telling what unreversible features will be installed in the update. I hope this helps.

Does XPS3 cost if you already have SP2?

No, SP3 is free. But with the next batch of Windows updates, you will get bugged to install it. It's noting new really, just fixed a bunch of bugs with the OS and just has all the updates from sp2 I think and sp1 I think.

I installed it last week, and have had no issues with it. I'm at a loss why you don't update dusty, not updating leads to insecurity. I also never disabled my antivirus, using nod32, and had no issues either during the instilation. I however have an image of my machine as a basic sp2 of windows with windoweyes installed, so have no problem falling back to that if necesary, and I used drive image xml, which is a free back up tool.

To post 12, what processer type do you have on your nonworking machine, is it Intel or AMD?
Is this an HP machine?

My computer just prompted me to install SP3. Will i lose programs if I install it? I know you have to make a backup in case something fails. I now have an external hard drive that has most of my word files and music. I'm also afraid I'm going to lose jaws when I update.

Geez. Its just an update to your computer. U won't loose anything. Just install it, and let it do its thing, and leave it alone. U won't loose any of your stuff.
